Biography: Jeff D. Fultz

I started building rods as a hobby in San Diego, CA. I was lucky enough to befriend a truly great rod builder in my neighborhood. I spent many days at Frank's shop learning the finer points of custom rod building. After a few years of spending all my free time either out in the drink chasing pelagic species, or at Franks' shop absorbing rod wisdom's, I decided to end my hitch with the U.S. Navy and head back to my home waters of Colorado. I started Platte River Rods as a part time business building custom rods. It wasn't long before I felt a calling to quit my day job, and pursue the rod business. I now work full time on rods but I also work part time as the Youth/Associate Pastor at Old Reyno Free Will Baptist church.

As a self-taught rodmaker starting in the early years with just a copy of the Garrison/Carmichael book to lead me through the process, I took an immediate liking to Garrisons style of rodmaking (mostly due to my own engineering type of mind). Like Many other self-taught rodmakers, I made most of my own equipment and even modified and invented some new equipment to do things "the Fultz way". I have now concentrated all of my efforts on making and repairing bamboo fly rods.

I still offer finely crafted custom graphite and fiberglass rods as well as repairs on such rods. My goal is to provide customers with a truly unique rod that is perfectly suited to their angling needs. I incorporate attributes into my custom built rods that you can not find in a factory built rod. Every step is completed by hand to insure each rod is built with quality details that deliver a custom performance . My past experience as an aviation machinist in the Navy has helped me to understand the physical dynamics of all rod materials from graphite to split cane. I have spent many hours studying and experimenting with these materials to better use their inherent qualities in order to produce efficient & reliable rods.

Besides making rods and fishing, I also enjoy bowhunting for elk, deer and turkey. I am a traditional archer and I hunt with a 70 pound longbow & an Alpine Archery compound. I spend most of the time in the month of September in the dark timber chasing Rocky Mountain Elk, In the winter I can be found occasional stalking deer in the hardwoods. I wouldn't call myself a trophy hunter as the main reason I hunt is to put food on the table, and to enjoy nature but I'm not stupid either, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a big one!
